The Inside of His Coat

He says take care how you cross the road when you get there.
The inside of his coat is an agency
Offering homes
For everyone.

But what happens when you've lost something?

He says take care how you put the words together
That's what makes life what it is.
He says make sure you connect to people.
But what happens when you've lost something
And you don't know what it is that you've lost
But it makes home impossible
No matter how much you try.

When you are there with them
Together, you say,
Let's raise the sky above us
Like we put up a tent
There shall be no more collapsing into one another.
Let us find a right order for these words,
Let's find the person who reads them the right way.
You, of course, he says, you know who it is
That invented the words to confuse us.
The inside of his coat is an agency
Offering homes
For everyone.

The Inside of His Coat

And let us find
The right way to put a step in front of the other,
For he has shuffled our steps,
And all the roads we'll ever take
Have tumbled into one another.

He says I've met you on your way home once
And I could have let you
But it must have been too early or late
Or else I don't know.

The inside of his coat,
Selling and renting the houses,
The inside of his coat.
The tent and the sky is the inside of his coat
But what happens when you've lost that something.

He says when you cannot make a home from a house
Make a home from the world
From the people and from the trees.
But what happens when you've lost that something.
He says all that in words
But then he adds something more.

He says the inside of my coat is a home in itself,
Rest there for a while
And I am,
And I am trying to.
