The hat

I seem to recognize you
( ... have I seen you before?)

Is it the way you look
back at the painter - do I wish
I was looked at so intently?

If I've known you
I'd have asked you:
"Can I borrow your hat?"
And perhaps with that I could have
some of your vigour -

and the eyes take over
the portrait like a sunset.
