The Empty Chair

Whatever sat in the chair
ruled the universe
with its eyes alone
could see beyond
the farthest galaxy
as if the emptiness
were in its palm
and knowable as the air
it breathed.

Whatever it was
it was
a monarch overthrown
a child grown old
the universe itself
the emptiness
