Sweetness

Mother comforted me
fingers danced upon my back
I only listen to her hands
her face is just a mask.

I waited until midnight
took it for a divine sign
then tip-toed to the kitchen
stealing herbs and spice and wine.

With careful steps and quiet
lit a candle, sat on the floor,
breathed the heavy scent of darkness
gently felt the skin he’d torn

I made my promise to the night
dripped blood from fingertip
poured my potion in the bottle
pressed the cork into the top.

And when he drinks his wine he’ll see
How deadly my sweetness can be.
