Soul Whispers

I watched in awe as the breath left my mouth floating upwards like a piece of gossamer.
“It’s so beautiful,” I whispered not wanting to break the perfect silence that surrounded us.
“Not as beautiful as you,” Evan replied pulling me closer to him.
“How high up are we?” I asked watching my breath float upwards. I wasn’t cold, how could I be with Evan by my side.
“High enough to almost touch heaven,” he smiled.
I took in my surroundings. Stars brighter than I could ever have imagined. Close enough that I could almost touch them.
“How am I breathing?” I asked realizing I was suspended in space.
“You’re not,” Evan whispered running his fingers down my arms as I watched the world below.
“But my breath, I can see it,” I said motioning to the white mist floating upwards.
“That’s not your breath, that’s your soul speaking to heaven.”
“My soul?”
“Yes Cassie, your soul. It knows where we are. It remembers the home that awaits it.”
I couldn’t speak, I had no words to answer Evan. I sighed and wrapped my arms tighter around his waist. I needed to be close to him, to feel his warmth. I’d never get enough of him.

Soul Whispers

As if reading my mind, he bent his head lower and brushed his lips against mine, softly at first, gently coaxing a response. I kissed him back a knowing deep inside that this could be the last time.
“Don’t worry Cassie, I’ll never leave you. We’re soul mates.”
I looked up into his deep blue eyes and forced a smile.
“I’m dying Evan. I won’t be here for much longer, you know that.”
“I do,” he replied, “but I still won’t leave you. We belong together Cassie and even death can’t tear us apart.”
“What do you mean?”
“Look down.”
I didn’t know what he was talking about but I allowed my eyes to follow his. I gasped in amazement. A thin golden thread was visible. A thread that went from my heart to his.
“We’re bound to one another Cass,” He smiled. “You won’t ever leave me and I’ll always be with you.”
“Oh Evan,” I cried, “I don’t want to die, I don’t want to disappear.”
“You won’t. You only leave your body behind, your soul lives forever, I promise. I want to show you everything Cass, I want you to be a part of my world, where there are no confines, nobody to restrict movement. We can go where we want, together, always.”
I woke with a start. I was so cold. I watched the breath leave my mouth, floating upwards like gossamer.
“Cassie, are you okay?”
My mom’s voice was fraught with fear.
“Fine mom,” I answered, “just cold.”
I was back in my bed. Evan was gone, but I was no longer afraid of death. It could take me now. I was ready. Ready to soar high with Evan for an eternity.
