So Far Away

Watching from the ship
he seems so small, so alone,
without a tether,
like a babe released into the world
when the umbilical cord is cut.
Once one with mother,
now breathing on one's own,
and as aging, floats farther and farther
from the once lone source
of sustenance in the womb
so like the pod of our ship,
of our life together.
Is he thinking of floating farther,
never returning?
If I lock the hatch will he
float out again, until he fades from sight?
From life?
I'm tempted.
He looks so peaceful floating there
so far away.
