Re-enactment

Half in shadow,
half in sunshine,
the cat
licks her paws,
scrubs her face,
plays her part by being
alert for errant mice
or wandering beetles.
Mother and Daughter
don’t notice her
batting at dust
floating in sunbeams.
They straighten aprons,
churn fake butter,
pickle wax beans,
and imagine
what show
they’ll watch
later on TV.
