‘I’d want to know, if it was me...’

she bent over backwards
leaning forwards

to tell him
through the passenger window,

    ‘well, I’ve heard...’

The driver listened
to the wanted
yet unwanted

words,
the sentence,  
the blotched full stop

in the life he knew,
thought he knew.

    ‘Thanks for letting me know’

he said
through the grind of his teeth
as he unclenched his hand

to turn the key
in the ignition
