The Child With Mars In Her Eyes

Her eyes, unprecedented, beyond blue.
See the fog of galaxies, decay of heavens.
No summer evenings there, no scented seasons,
she’s distant, far out in her universe, a time capsule
smelling of false ancestors and broken promises.

Searching for mirrors, her visions are straw-men
trembling behind walls, a bloodstain on flagstones,
she’s been a child too long. The cobalt and the azure
peter out. Beneath her lashes,
Mars ascends.
