Lost Love

She could not love him
Like she once did

When May blossom
Drifted through the Orchard
Starred the green carpet
Their embroidered bed

Or in the first summer
Hidden by the maize
A Pale green veil
Enclosing each kiss

He had held her hand
While she wept in the chamber
And the nurse left them quietly
For long hours and long days

But the snow came
And coldness found its way
Through thin slats
And thin lines grew

For nights without a lantern
Don't show in the alley
A lithe frocked figure
Stealing embrace

Lost Love

But his eyes told her
What the ladies did tattle
His hands never resting
Where they'd stayed before

He did not love her
Like he once could
