Childhood Crushes

Striped candy sticks, red and yellow lollies,
Little prams in gardens, in supermarket trolleys;
Carrying little ones
To carnivals, sweet meats and fun
Back when memory had just begun.
Wonderlands of colors and flavors,
And all that youth devours;
Soda floats and sweet lime,
In the Spring of their time.
For soon the sun will go high overhead
And the first leaf will begin to turn pale
But –
Before all that there’s time still some time
For one last lick, and one last suckle
Of those wonder years before nighttime.
